What Is Code + Building?
It
is a term that I use to describe the way that I design. I have never built a
deck that met code, every deck I have ever built has exceeded code. To me, a
building code is a list of minimum requirements that have been outlined to
make sure that some form of minimum quality is being maintained in new
structures. With all the horror stories you hear about collapsing decks, and
just plain old poor craftsmanship, why would you build to the minimum
requirements? In addition, building codes
are always changing, what might be to code this year, might not be next
year. We subscribe to many trade publications and read about possible code
changes and even implement them before we are required to.
Just a couple examples of our “Code + Building” practices.
Footings:
Current Code - States that if a
deck is not attached to the home, that the footings do not need to extend
below the frost line.
Code + - All our footings are a
minimum of 30” below grade. Why worry about frost ever heaving your deck?
Design Loads:
Current Code – Decks must be designed for a minimum of 40 pounds per square foot Live Load, which is people, furniture, etc. Code + - We design all of our decks to a minimum of 50 psf and depending on other variables sometimes more.
These are only a couple examples of the way we design and build above and beyond what current building codes require. So you can rest assured your deck will be safe and last a lifetime.
