How many times you step out in your backyard and wish you
could do something a little different with your current deck? Maybe a fire pit
for added ambiance, or a fountain to add a feeling of life, or even just better
lighting?
It is easy to sit out there and think all of this stuff, and
then brush it off because you think it will be too expensive or too much work.
After all, your deck is for enjoyment and relaxation. Not a money pit and a
place to put in all this work.
Well you can relax again; upgrading your deck is not as
challenging as you might think it is. Simple planning and budgeting makes all
the difference. The first step is to make a wish list of all the upgrades you
would like to see out there this year. Next to each item, write why you would
like it and where you think it should be placed.
Then sketch it all out on paper so you can see the big
picture. A few things to keep in mind are flow of traffic and natural lighting.
For example, if you really want those solar lights to create a path to the
storage shed, there should be ample sunlight to charge them during the day.
Otherwise, consider a 12 volt string of outdoor lighting rather than solar.
Another tip is to ensure you will have proper lighting if you
are consider adding a fire-pit. While the fire itself does put off some light,
it is suggested you supplement with surrounding lights so nobody feels left in
the dark.
If you created your list and sketched out a rough plan, you
will probably see that some things on your wish list just would not go well with
others. Remember to consider flow, the last thing you want is an overcrowded
deck.
Select the items you want to put in first and just start with
those, keeping in mind any wiring that may be required. If you are extending the
size of your deck but have in your plan to surround it with wired lighting, it
would be wise to set the wiring before you lay the brick or pavestones.
The same goes for fountains, remember you may need a water
source and you will definitely require electricity for a pump and filter on most
any fountain.
Having your plan prioritized and then looking at the big picture will help you
from getting stuck and feeling overwhelmed. Work on your deck a little bit at a
time. Before you know it you will have that outdoor oasis you have always
dreamed about.
